Welcome to the Hamelin City Museum.
The tale of the Pied Piper is a central topic which has been completely reworked. The museum showcases the few remaining original items relating to the Pied Piper, exhibits exciting artefacts dating back to the 1884 and 1934 jubilees and presents the Pied Piper as an important figure in advertising and tourism. And, there is also a real treat in the form of the Pied Piper Theatre, a mechanical production which takes visitors right into very heart of what went on.
We would like to invite you to take an exciting trip through the history of this lively city on the river. There is a varied exhibition taking you back in time and showing you what was and still is important in the region.
The Fascinating story of Hamelin and the surrounding area comes to life over an area covering 1200 sq. m. With around 1300 original artefacts to turn history into an adventure. One of the most important principles of the new exhibition is multiple perspectives. We will not only show you the glittering, glamorous and lively side of the story, we will also be asking about "real life" behind the scenes. The Battle of Langensalza was bloody and many Hamelin people died in the wars against Napoleon, ambitiously positioned villages had to be given up, ships sank in the Weser and you could get rid of rivals by declaiming them as witches.
History is varied and never one-dimensional. We often ask questions to which the answers are not yet known. We are interested in research, which is not static but always moving forward. We are constantly incorporating new findings into the exhibition. It is our job to make sure the museum is alive!
